Prediction: Easier AI Extraction Will Make Source Review More Valuable

Explore why source-linked review could become a stronger product feature as extracting draft data becomes easier, and how to test that idea.
My prediction is conditional: if producing a plausible extraction becomes easier, the ability to inspect and resolve uncertain rows will become a more important difference between import tools. This is a proposed direction for product design, not a measured market trend or a promise about future model capability.
Sheet Parser provides a concrete domain for examining the idea. The following review workflow is illustrative and uses synthetic vendor records. It asks what would make an extracted price usable after the initial model response has already arrived.
Separate generating a proposal from accepting a decision
A demonstration often ends when a table appears. Operational work continues when a user asks whether a row belongs to the correct vendor, which heading supplied its currency, or why its unit differs from the last import. Those questions concern how the result will be used, even if extraction itself becomes less expensive.
The prediction depends on that distinction remaining important. A tightly controlled export with dependable fields may need little interpretive review. A varied collection of supplier documents is a different setting. Keep the forecast scoped to workflows where uncertainty remains meaningful after the first response.
Make evidence part of the record relationship
A reviewable draft needs a way to locate the input it came from and the transformation that produced it. The W3C PROV primer describes provenance through entities, activities, and agents. An application can use that separation as a thinking aid without adopting the entire vocabulary or implementing a new provenance service.
For a price draft, the input is a stored source revision, the activity is an extraction attempt, and a later acceptance is a separate action. Keeping these relationships explicit makes it possible to explain whether a value was copied, interpreted, or corrected. It does not establish that the underlying source was accurate.
Design a review task around a specific uncertainty
Suppose the amount is readable but the unit is unclear. The interface can open the relevant source region and ask the reviewer to confirm the selling basis. This is a smaller task than requesting approval of an entire document with no explanation of which fields need attention.
A source-linked task should preserve the user's place in the queue, allow unresolved outcomes, and show what changed after a correction. Status messages should be available to assistive technology without relying on a visual toast alone. Review quality depends on whether people can complete the task reliably, not simply whether a source-preview button exists.
Test the prediction with a modest prototype
Create two prototypes using the same synthetic extraction results. One shows the candidate fields and a document link. The other opens the relevant source context beside a named review question. Ask participants to resolve the same ambiguous rows and explain why they accepted or rejected them.
Record completion time, correction quality, and remaining uncertainty separately. A faster review with more missed unit mistakes is not an improvement for this task. Describe the participants and documents used so the result remains a local product finding rather than an unsupported claim about all AI import tools.
Look for evidence that would weaken the idea
The forecast would be less useful if supported vendors move to structured exports that eliminate the ambiguity being reviewed. It could also fail if source extraction cannot produce dependable locations, or if opening document previews introduces more friction than the questions justify. These are conditions to investigate, not details to hide.
A second possibility is that users primarily need a one-off personal import and accept manual cleanup elsewhere. Building an elaborate review system for that audience may add cost without serving their workflow. The appropriate investment follows the consequence and frequency of unresolved data.
Prepare without committing to a large subsystem
A small preparation is to retain stable source references and distinguish draft creation from acceptance. Those decisions support investigation today and leave room for a better review interface later. They do not require predicting a particular model provider, pricing curve, or product category winner.
For a portfolio article, show one ambiguous row and the questions a source-aware interface could answer. That turns a broad AI prediction into a testable engineering proposal. The claim remains conditional, while the demonstration gives readers something concrete to inspect and challenge.
A review task tied to one unresolved field
This fictional task describes the proposed interface experiment. Source references and allowed actions come from the application, and access must be checked when the task or document is opened.

Tradeoff to keep in mind
Source retention and precise references add storage and maintenance work. The proposed advantage should be tested with representative tasks; a provenance record by itself does not make an interface useful.
